The Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Toronto is pleased to open this call for entries to participate in the “#1 Minute to Show with Spanish & Portuguese” contest Fall 2024 to all the undergraduate students enrolled in its courses with codes SPA, PRT, LAS or JLN during Fall 2024.
“#1 Minute to Show with Spanish & Portuguese” Fall 2024 Contest Rules
A. Eligibility
- To be eligible to enter the contest, an individual must:
- Be a legal resident of the province of Ontario.
- Be an undergraduate student enrolled in a course offered by the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Toronto during the Fall 2024 term.
- Be over 16 years of age on the day this call is published. Those under the age of 18 must have the permission of a parent or guardian to enter the contest.
- Be the sole owner of all right, title and interest (including copyright) in and to the video (as defined in Section B below) submitted in connection to the contest.
- Be enrolled in the Quercus site for the Department of Spanish & Portuguese + LAS
The following people are not eligible to enter the contest:
- First-degree family relationships (parents, children, siblings, including half- or stepsiblings) and/or those who live under the same roof as members of the organizing committee and/or jurors of this contest. To receive a complete list of the names of the members of the organizing committee and the jury, please write an email to comm.spanport@utoronto.ca requesting this information.
B. How to Enter
- There is no entry fee and no purchase necessary to enter the “#1 Minute To Show with Spanish & Portuguese” Fall 2024 contest.
- To enter, contestants must answer completely a questionnaire about their program progress and submit a video through the Quercus site for Spanish & Portuguese + LAS. Click here to enroll in the Quercus site (current UofT students only)
- Only one submission is allowed per contestant, although the same submission can be used as an entry for both concerts.
- Submissions will be judged on the satisfactory progress of the student in their courses within the department (50%) and the creative or artistic qualities of the video (50%)
- Contestants must create a video of themselves explaining which concert they would like to attend and why. This video should have a minimum length of thirty (30) seconds and a maximum length of one (1) minute. The video can be produced in Spanish, Portuguese or English. Each contestant further represents and warrants that (i) the video does not contain any material that is libelous, defamatory, profane or obscene; (ii) the video is original and all right, title, and interest (including copyright) therein and thereto is owned and/or controlled by the entrant to the full extent necessary to enable the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Toronto to use the video as contemplated by these Contest Rules; and (iii) the video does not infringe upon the intellectual property or other statutory or common law rights of any third party.
- Submissions must be received prior to the end of the contest’s applicable contest period to be eligible for entry. Submissions will be declared invalid if they are late, illegible, incomplete, forged, garbled or mechanically or electronically reproduced. No communication or correspondence will be exchanged with entrants except with those selected as potential contest winner(s). For tickets to Chayanne's concert on November 17, 2024, the deadline for submissions is Monday, November 4 at 9:00 AM. For tickets to Shakira's concert on May 26, 2025, the deadline for submissions is Monday, December 9, 2024 at 9:00 AM.
C. Prizes and Prize Conditions
- Prizes will be awarded as follows:
- Three tickets to Bailemos Otra Vez World Tour by Chayanne, concert on November 17, 2024 at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, ON. One ticket will be awarded to a student enrolled in a course in each of the area programs: one in Spanish, one in Portuguese, one in Latin American Studies.
- Three tickets to Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour by Shakira, concert on May 26, 2025 at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, ON. One ticket will be awarded to a student enrolled in a course each of the area programs: one in Spanish, one in Portuguese, one in Latin American Studies.
- Each contest prize shall have an approximate retail value between one Canadian dollar (CDN $1.00) and three hundred and fifty Canadian dollars (CDN $350.00). Winners shall not be entitled to receive the difference between the actual prize value and the approximate prize value.
- Winners will be contacted by representatives of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese with instructions on how to claim the prize. For Chayanne's concert, winners will be contacted on Friday, November 8, 2024. For Shakira's concert, winners will be contacted on Friday, January 10, 2025.
- Prizes must be accepted as awarded and cannot be transferred, assigned, substituted or redeemed for cash. Any unused portion of a prize will be forfeited and have no cash value. The Department of Spanish & Portuguese reserves the right, in their sole discretion, to substitute a prize of equal or greater value if a prize cannot be awarded for any reason.
- The Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the University of Toronto shall not assume any liability for lost, damaged, or misdirected prizes.
- If an artist or any of his/her band members are unable to attend the applicable concert, or if the concert is cancelled for any reason whatsoever, the prize shall be deemed fulfilled and will not be substituted, except in the sole discretion of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese.
- All incidental costs and expenses not explicitly referred to herein as part of the prize description are the sole responsibility of the prize winner(s), where applicable. All prizes are subject to availability and substitution. The winner(s) shall not seek reimbursement for any expense from the Department of Spanish & Portuguese or the University of Toronto.
D. Winner Selection
- Following the end of the applicable Contest Period, the Department of Spanish & Portuguese will select a total of six (6) contestants, with prizes to be distributed to one (1) contestant from each area program for each of the concerts announced, from all eligible entries received during the contest period. Each contestant shall be eligible to win only one (1) prize. The odd of being selected as a potential winner are dependent upon the number of eligible entries received for the contest.
- Submissions will be judged on the satisfactory progress of the student in their courses and/or program within the department (50%) and the creative or artistic qualities of the video (50%)
- Selected contestants will be contacted at their official University of Toronto email address according to the dates mentioned in Section C (above) of these rules and regulations. If they do not respond within the prescribed timeline set in the notification, they will be disqualified and will not receive a prize, and another contestant may be selected (as determined by the Department of Spanish & Portuguese in its sole discretion) until such time as a contestant satisfies the terms set out herein. The Department of Spanish & Portuguese or its representatives are not responsible for the failure for any reason whatsoever of a selected contestant to receive notification or for the Department of Spanish & Portuguese to receive a selected contestant’s response.
- Winners will be required to sign a photography and video release to grant to the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the University of Toronto the unrestricted right to publish the winning video submission and photography / video on the day of the concert for the tickets awarded.
E. Indemnification by Contestant
By entering the Contest, each contestant releases, indemnifies and holds the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the University of Toronto as well as its representatives harmless from any and all liability for any injuries, loss or damage of any kind to the contestants or any other person, including personal injury, exposure to the COVID-19 virus, death, or property damage, resulting in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from (a) their participation in the Contest or any Contest-related activity; (b) the acceptance, use, or misuse of any prize; or (c) any breach of the Contest Rules. Each entrant agrees to fully indemnify the Releasees from any and all claims made by third parties relating to the entrant’s participation in the Contest, without limitation.
F. Limitation of Liability
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the University of Toronto (herein “The Sponsors”) assume no responsibility or liability for lost, late, unintelligible/illegible, falsified, damaged, misdirected or incomplete entries, notifications, responses, replies, or for any computer, online, software, telephone, hardware or technical malfunctions that may occur, including but not limited to malfunctions that may affect the transmission or non-transmission of an entry. The Sponsors are not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by website users or by any of the equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the Contest or by any technical or human error which may occur in the administration of the Contest. The Sponsors assume no responsibility or liability in the event that the Contest cannot be conducted as planned for any reason, including reasons beyond the control of the Sponsors, such as infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or corruption of the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Contest and/or the Contest Website.
By participating in a Contest, each entrant agrees to be bound by the Contest Rules. Entrants further agree to be bound by the decisions of the Sponsors, which shall be final and binding in all respects. The Sponsors reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to disqualify any entrant found to be: (a) violating the Contest Rules; (b) tampering or attempting to tamper with the entry process or the operation of the Contest; and/or (c) acting in an unsportsmanlike or disruptive manner, or with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person.
Winners must at all times behave appropriately when taking part in the prize and observe the Contest Rules and any other rules or regulations in force at any prize-related locations, including but not limited to any COVID-19 requirements in force.
G. Privacy / Use of Personal Information.
By participating in the Contest, each entrant: (i) grants to the Sponsors the right to use their personal information provided when they enter the Contest and the video (if applicable) (collectively the “Personal Information”) for the purpose of administering the Contest, including but not limited to contacting and announcing the winners and coordinating the provision of the Contest prize; (ii) grants to the Sponsors the right to use their Personal Information for publicity and promotional purposes relating to the Contest as well as the academic, social and recruitment activities of the Department of Spanish & Portuguese in any and all media without further compensation unless prohibited by law; and (iii) acknowledges that the Sponsors may disclose their Personal Information to third-party agents and service providers of the Sponsors in connection with any of the activities listed in (i) and/or (ii) above.
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese will use each entrant’s personal information only for identified purposes, and protect each entrant’s personal information in a manner that is consistent with the University of Toronto Privacy Policy.
H. TERMINATIO
The Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the University of Toronto reserve the right, in its sole discretion, to terminate any Contest, in whole or in part, and/or modify, amend or suspend a Contest, and/or the Contest Rules in any way, at any time, for any reason without prior notice.
These are the official Contest Rules. The Contest Rules are subject to change without notice in order to comply with any applicable federal, provincial and municipal laws or the policy of any other entity having jurisdiction over the Sponsors and/or the Contests.
I. LANGUAGE DISCREPANCY
In the event of any discrepancy or inconsistency between the terms and conditions of the Contest Rules and disclosures or other statements contained in any Contest-related materials, including but not limited to the Contest entry form, print or online advertising, the terms and conditions of the Contest Rules shall prevail, govern and control.
This contest is organized by the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Toronto and it is in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered or associated with Facebook, Instagram, Quercus, Canvas or their affiliates. Similarly, this contest is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by Shakira, Chayanne, Live Nation, Ticketmaster, Scotiabank Arena, or their affiliates.
